Where did you come from?

Most of my conversations when meeting people involve simple questions such as: What do you do?, Where did you go to school?, Where are you from? College was full of the last question. Where you were from somehow partially defined you. From Texas, from any other state, from another country, from a small town, from a big town, etc. Since being in Heidelberg, the question we get first and most frequently is: Where did you come from? aka Where were you last stationed? I found it so odd that nobody was interested in where we are from. I like to say Shreveport because it is so dear to my heart, although as a side note, they all cringe because quite a few here have been stationed at Barksdale and they all hated it. They un-affectionately call it Shreve-Hole. (I know un-affectionately is not a word. Just go with it.) And they in turn rattle off the many places they have already been stationed, along with how they liked it, didn't like it, or were indifferent. It's strange to not have a conversation with people about how we are from Texas. I didn't realize how much of a proud Texan I am until nobody wanted to hear about our Texas roots. I am sure eventually it won't even phase me. Soon I will surely become "military" and ignore people's places of birth and childhood along with the rest of them. For now, I am thankful for our fond second home of Shreveport that I am constantly asked about and hope for many more to follow.
