FLAG Class = Families Learning About Germany. We signed up for this class on base the first week we arrived here to learn more about the country, the people, the language, etc. We had heard it was good, but boy did it completely exceed our expectations!
First, I must say our instructor Havi LePage is FABULOUS. She is the very definition of fabulous, in fact. She is a tiny woman with a whole lot of spunk and ton of understanding and love. She is British (and has a great accent) but grew up in Bermuda and then moved to the States. Her first husband was Air Force (so she loved us and the Parkers-a family that flew over here with us/Nathan works with Rafe) and her current husband works for the EPA, contracting with the Army here. She urged her husband to move here 20 years ago because she wanted an adventure and now she teaches the FLAG class on base.
We learned so much about so much. We had class Mon-Wed from 9:30am-1:30pm. (There was a class on Thursday but we had to miss because of the walk through at our apartment. ) We learned about food, recycling, proper German etiquette, cleaning products, apotheke (the pharmacy), quiet hours, VAT forms, the German equivalent of AAA, the renter's association, train and bus stations, how German children are raised, how well behaved their dogs are, how to introduce ourselves to our neighbors, how to ask many questions, and on and on and on.
I wish all of you could have experienced this class even though you aren't moving to Germany and/or aren't even in the military. It was so enjoyable and Havi was such a delight!
