My mother hates cheese. She can't stand to eat it on anything. The only slight exception is pizza, but even then it has to be very light. As in she can't smell it on there. So I grew up, as most children do, imitating my parents. Mostly my mom since I am female. And so it followed that I too hated cheese. Every food item was ordered cheese-less, except for pizza. Then, my first semester of college came. I was in a car full of freshman girls and we were on our way to the drive-in theatre. We stopped at the McDonald's drive-thru for dinner beforehand. My friend who was driving placed our order, mine being two hamburgers, plain and dry. She paid and we drove off. I soon discovered that my order had not been taken correctly and found myself staring at 2 CHEESEburgers, plain and dry. I thought I was going to die. I am a picky eater and do not just eat anything placed in front of me. But the alternative was to eat only my fries and go hungry the rest of the night. At that point in my life, I was consuming up to 3000 calories a day. Ridiculous but true. So I braced myself and took a bite. I have never looked back. Every order placed at McDonald's since has gladly been 2 cheeseburgers, sometimes 3, fries and a coke. And my goodness, do I love it! Those 2 cheeseburgers that night opened the door for me into the world of cheese. It's great on salad, bread, potatoes, and tacos. And there are so many kinds. I love cheddar, brie, feta, parmesan, and swiss. I am apparently in good company here in Germany, as they are the world's largest consumer of cheese. I can't wait to try more kinds. Who knew something moldy and curdled could taste SO good? : )
