Captain, My Captain

4 years ago yesterday Nathan graduated from OTS and yesterday he pinned on Captain. Because he returned from Italy in time for his promotion, they had a small ceremony up in "the vault," where his office is now. And because we had less than 48 hours notice, things were a little thrown together. I was able to get a small spread of food and drinks together and there were about 12 people in attendance, including my co-worker Janesse. Major Gipson said some words about Nathan and his career so far, and gave him the oath. I didn't get to pin on his rank this time, which was a little disappointing. He just wore his ABUs with his Captain rank into work that day. It's still odd when I call him at work and he answers with "Captain Motz" instead of "Lieutenant Motz." Throws me off every time.

so proud of him!

Alright. This cake.... Where to begin? It's the most hideous cake we have ever seen. Like I said, we had very little time to get all this together since Nathan's return from Vicenza was earlier than expected. I'm not a great baker and our oven is definitely wonky. So I decided to grab a generic cake at the commissary and have the bakery write on it. I had done this for a last minute baby shower before, so figured it wouldn't be a problem. I couldn't have been more wrong. First, I had a hard time finding a cake that wasn't already decorated with babies or balloons. This one seemed alright, assuming I could simply ask to have the pastel flowers removed. I ended up having to beg and plead with the bakery just to write on it. Apparently the guy that used to do it had PCSed. I wrote out that I wanted it to say "Congratulations, Captain Motz!" in blue icing. (Note the comma, please. My mama didn't raise no idiot.) And to pretty, pretty please remove the flowers because it was for my husband. Not my five year old little girl. They assured me they would do all that and that I could pick it up the next day, a few hours before the ceremony. And below is what I got instead... Even Nathan had to admit it was pretty tacky. That's bad. The man never cares how any kind of food looks. Lisa, I'm going to pay you a million bucks to fly to wherever we are to make the cake for the next one : )

Here's the post from his last promotion, to 1st Lieutenant. No real ceremony for that one since he was TDY in Biloxi, Mississippi.
